Work Package 5

WP Leader: VTT

The objective of WP5 is to collect information on the business models needed to support the implementation of the energy efficiency, demand management and distributed energy services in smart grids in competitive market. Moreover, the WP5 aims at analysing what kind of ICT solutions, infrastructure and development methods are needed to support these business models. This approach is more business driven than technology driven.

Task 5.1: Prioritise requirements – Assess ICT offer/needs.

Task 5.1 will identify:

  1. the main features of novel business models that support smart distributed energy resources and grids in competitive energy market thus enabling improved energy efficiency, demand management and response of distributed energy resources;
  2. the main drivers for such new business models;
  3. existing methods and tools for the development and management of these business models;
  4. the focus and scope of application of the methods, tools and business models developed so far;
  5. ICT needs and requirements to ICT and related infrastructure set by the novel business models and their development and management;
  6. priorities of these requirements regarding importance and time order.

Task 5.2: Identify tech and non-tech barriers; Identify solutions to barriers.

Task 5.2 will recognize barriers related to ICT, regulation, legislation, business and possibly also environment, human factors etc. that oppose the development, management and application of new business models needed for energy efficient smart grids. This will be done based on the experience achieved when developing and applying novel business models for smart grids and DER aggregation and lessons learned from successes and failure stories. The task will also identify related new opportunities. The methods and ICT solutions identified in task 5.1 will be assessed, clarified and ranked with respect to those barriers and opportunities.

Task 5.3: Identify and categorise policy actions; rank ICT vs. solutions and policy.

Task 5.3 will analise and propose policy instruments and recommendations for enabling wide application of ICT and business model solutions and best practices. Mitigating conflicts of interest with incentives, sanctions and enabling utilisation of synergies and innovations will be assessed both in short and long term.

Task 5.4: Share and prioritise policy actions and produce recommendations.

Task 5.4 will share, integrate and harmonise the recommended actions with the other WPs. Based on the findings, it may recommend modifications on relevant Directives and Standards.
