Work Package 4

The objective of WP4 is to to explore the interaction between the demand side requirements and the ICT solutions for supporting an efficient and easy integration of an active customer within an “intelligent” grid. It will particularly investigate the possibilities of embedding smart load control solutions offering flexibility to both the customer and the grid operator.

Task 4.1: Prioritise requirements – Assess ICT offer/needs.

Task 4.1 will be dedicated to the exploration of the scope of Demand-side integration landscape, the segmentation of sectors activities. The tendency as well as the objectives to be reached in terms of energy efficiency at the end user side will also be explored. This landscaping enables ICT applications and requirements to be defined for components and systems as well as for control processes and activities (actors roles and added values) which in turn will result in priority definition while assessing ICT opportunities.

Task 4.2: Identify tech and non-tech barriers; Identify solutions to barriers.

Task 4.2 will investigate the potential barriers for ICT integration when dealing with demand side integration. The investigation will cover both technical (standardisation, protocols, ICT security and data protection, technology level, legacy systems etc.) and non technical (customer comfort, regulatory environment, technology risk, technology transition and appropriation/acceptation etc.). In this context, the interaction with DSO (Distribution System Operator) for mutual benefits energy based services will be examined taking into account the integration with smart grids with a special focus on information management, interoperability, security and flexibility (embedding smart energy management functions at the end user side taking advantage of the smart meter with the perspective of “smart building”). Once the barriers are identified, directions for overcoming them will be provided.

Task 4.3: Identify and categorise policy actions; rank ICT vs. solutions and policy.

Task 4.3 will explore the existing policy actions as well as best practices for existing demand side programmes (technology and policy), position them with respect to the current / tendency situation and identify gaps and potential improvements. This work will be conducted with the background of ICT solutions as a technological enabler for policy actions.

Task 4.4: Share and prioritise policy actions and produce recommendations.

Task 4.4 will compile together the solutions for efficient Demand Side Integration with potential policy actions most appropriate for boosting and handling this issue. Consequently, the prioritisation of these policy actions will be established. In the context, recommendations on policy implementation and best practices for ICT supporting Demand Side Integration and active customer participation while managing his comfort with respect to technology development, efficiency, achieving the defined targets and accommodating tendencies and evolutions will be provided.
